Product data management

Product Data Management ( PDM) is a concept which has as its object to store product defining, representing, presenting data and documents as a result of product development, to manage and to provide in subsequent phases of the product life cycle. Basis of this interaction is an integrated product model. Furthermore, the support of product development is attributed to the appropriate methods on the basis of process models the PDM. Accompanying the PDM, the product information management (PIM ), which is on the provision of product information for different output media, especially in the commercial sector and sales, specializing developed.

Before the concept of product data management was (PDM ) in common use, was in the 1980 Engineering Data Management (EDM ) of the common terminus.

A PDM system is part of the operational information and coordination system. It implements the methods and rules of product data management. PDM systems include program interface to CAx software, ERP software, software of their own class, inter alia, They are therefore not to be understood as a monolithic application systems, but rather as the core of a PDM solution. Not all methods or rules of the PDM are made mandatory by a PDM application system. Rather, the CAx systems or class of document management or workflow management systems can provide such functions. For the data exchange between the system classes involved and the description of product models, the standard series ISO has largely 10303 (STEP) established as a standard.

The on the market PDM systems have evolved from three different directions:

  • DMS ( Document Management Systems ) systems
  • CAD (computer aided design) systems: computer-aided design and computer- aided design
  • ERP ( Enterprise Resource Planning) systems: the plan [ of the insert / use ] the corporate resources

This CAD - systems can be viewed as the origin of PDM. The discipline arose primarily from problems of the CAD model and drawing management, caused by a dramatic increase in product volume of data in connection with the introduction of these systems. Furthermore, the increasing product complexity has led to a higher degree of cross-linking of product information, so that finding new concepts for product data management became urgent.

The introduction of a PDM solution is to make it possible to increase the quality of the product development and the time and cost of product development to diminish. With the goal of a continuous flow of information these benefits to be passed on to downstream, participating in the product life cycle organizational units. Result of this operation will be a product the complete reproducibility of work stands (configurations).

PDM systems are generally industrie-/unternehmensspezifisch.
