Progreso is a city in the south of Uruguay.

Geography

It is located on the territory of the department of Canelones in the fourth sector north of the immediately adjacent city of Las Piedras, which is separated by the Arroyo Colorado from Progreso, and near the west past leading Ruta 5 East happens within a few kilometers of the Arroyo del Gigante the city. In the urban area Progresos or to the western city limits lie the sources of the Arroyo del Colorado and Colorado Chico, two tributaries of the Arroyo Colorado. History

The settlement of the area of ​​today's Progreso began 1745. In the following second half of the 18th century, were then propagated farmers and traders down there. End of the 19th century was the environment in which the local fields mainly agriculture and cattle breeding, known as the Arroyo del Gigante, Punta del Gigante or Punta del Colorado. The present name was given the city whose founding process began on November 15, 1871, after that year, the construction of the railway reached the city, and it housed from now on the same station. As a result, now also railroad workers settled here, many of whom were of English origin. On July 1, 1953 Progreso was classified by Law No. 11,968 in the " Pueblo " category.
