Prokhorovka, Belgorod Oblast

Prokhorovka (Russian Прохоровка ) is an urban-type settlement in Russia in Belgorod Oblast, 56 km north of the regional capital Belgorod and about 80 km south of Kursk. Its population is 9761 (as of October 14, 2010 ).

History

The Polish nobles Kirill Grigorjewitsch Ilinski founded during the Russo - Polish War 1654-1656 on his march from Poland to Belgorod Ilinski the village.

In the 1860s, the village was first renamed in honor of Tsar Alexander II in Alexandrovka. In the vicinity in the 1880s, the new railway line Kursk - Kharkov - Azov and the Alexandrovka was closest station was in honor of the railroad engineer WI Prokhorov 's name Prokhorovka. From 1928 Alexandrovka formed the center of the Alexandrowker Rajons.
