Propoxur is employed as stomach or contact poison insecticide and acaricide belonging to the class of urethanes.

History

The connection was made in 1961 by the chemical company Bayer AG to market.

Related compounds and synthesis

A derived compound is 2- Isopropoxyphenol ( C9H12O2, CAS 4812-20-8 ), from which by the addition of methyl isocyanate, with a catalytic aid of triethylamine, the active compound can be synthesized propoxur.

Use

Propoxur was, among other things as pesticides in agriculture and in the home, as well as a remedy for fleas in cats and dogs ( dosage forms example, powders, collars, sprays and shampoo are ) used. Since June 1, 2009, however, the decision 2009/324/EC of the European Commission, April 14, 2009 is valid, which was adopted in the framework of European biocide. In it the non-inclusion of the active ingredient propoxur for product type 18 was adopted (insecticides, acaricides and products to control other arthropods ). It was still a selling period of 12 months granted, which ended on May 31, 2010. After this date, biocidal products containing propoxur and belong to the product-type 18, no longer be placed on the market.

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland is not approved as a pesticide.

Toxicology

The median lethal dose (LD50) for oral administration in rats is about 50 mg per kilogram body weight. An overdose can cause neurological symptoms in treated animals. The antidote is atropine.

About carcinogenic effects of propoxur are no reports. In animal studies, propoxur showed teratogenic effects at high doses.
