Propsteikirche (Königsberg)

History

Since the predominance of Poland was threatened in Prussia by the Swedes, had Sigismund III. Wasa to save his investiture, pushing for equal rights for Catholics and obliged the Elector Johann Sigismund in 1611 on the occasion of his Belehung in Warsaw to build a Catholic church, which was consecrated in 1616. In her time she was the only Catholic Church in the Diocese of Sambia and was under the bishop of Warmia. In the great fire in Löbennicht 1764 it was destroyed and rebuilt from 1765-76 by ​​the Planning Director Johann Samuel Lilienthal in baroque style. She was also the first Baroque church in the city. Lilienthal also built the parsonage with the beautiful frontispiece. 1810 Catholic funeral for Queen Luise took place here. The church was founded in 1876 assigned to the Old Catholics, but came to their decline in numbers again to the Roman Catholic church. In 1886 the provost Dinder Archbishop of Gniezno. The church was completely destroyed during the air raids on Königsberg in World War II. Nevertheless, the Catholic life in Sackville has been able to recover. In 1995, a Catholic church was built with adjoining workshops and social station not far from the bag Heimer goal of the Catholic " Community Lumen Christi ".
