Propyläen

Propylaea is the title of one of the end of 1798 published by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe by the end of 1800 magazine for visual arts. It was contested almost exclusively by Goethe himself and his friend with him a painter and art historian Johann Heinrich Meyer content.

The Propylaea should provide visual artists with theoretical instruction, promote the art interest of the audience ( and potential clients and buyers) and their tastes. Goethe advocated in the journal that is focused on the ancient ideal of art, that he was required at this time also in his poetry. With its commitment to classicism he turned against the emerging romance.

After two years, the Propylaea presented due to lack of subscribers with their appearance. Goethe's attempt to take on the development of art in Germany in favor of classicism influence, ultimately failed.
