Prostaglandin H2 ( PGH2 ) is an intermediate of prostaglandin synthesis in vertebrates. It is synthesized by cyclooxygenases in two steps from arachidonic acid. Stimulate inflammatory responses and regulates the secretion of gastric juice. The acetylsalicylic acid achieves its effect by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase -1. In this case, the aspirin acetylated Ser530 of prostaglandin H synthase, and thus blocks the channel, such that the arachidonic acid from the membrane and can not come into the active site of the enzyme.

Prostaglandin H2 is a starting material for other hormones: prostaglandin I2, prostaglandin E2, prostaglandin D2 and prostaglandin F2, and thromboxane A2.
