Protea (car)

GRP Engineering cc is a former automobile manufacturer from South Africa. Founder was John Myers.

The only production car model from the manufacturer was a two-seater roadster, which was produced under the brand name Protea. Only 16 or 24 units of the model were produced. He is also the first supercar Africa. First presentation of the vehicle took place in 1956 at the SCC show at Milner Park, Johannesburg.

As motorization the Protea served a four-cylinder gasoline engine with an output of 27.6 kW ³ with a displacement of 1172 cm. The rotational speed is 4500 revolutions per minute.

The company also developed a model, the Protea triumph, which should compete against the vehicles of the Fiat, Ford and Ferrari especially for racing. Drivers of the model was Tony Fergusson, who, however, against the competition with the weak engine had no chance. For use came a gasoline engine from Ford, which had a capacity of about 1.2 liters. The normal Protea however, also took part in some races and achieved victories in several races, which is attributed to its lightweight body of just 750 kilograms.

After a year of production, the model without successor was adjusted in the following year as the funder, the Hudson River, moved back to England. Thus ended the existence of the company. The only surviving vehicles are to be found in the museums Franschhoek Motor Museum and James Hall Museum of Transport.
