Proterius of Alexandria

Proterius of Alexandria ( † 457 ) was 451-457 Patriarch of Alexandria in the wake of the 451 settled by the Council of Chalcedon Dioscorus of Alexandria.

The establishment of the Proterios led to mass unrest, military protection and suppression measures in Alexandria and finally the assassination of the new bishop by council opponents on the eve of Easter 457 His opponents accused Proterios the persecution of dissenters and made him responsible for the killing of more than 30,000 Christian men and women in Alexandria.

His pontificate is thus the sign of the emerging schism between the Coptic and Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria.
