Protestantism in Laos

The Protestants in Laos are a small Christian minority.

Number

Together with the Roman Catholics represent about 2 % of the population. With about 300 communities, Protestantism has grown rapidly in the last decade. Church officials give the number of believers with about 60,000. The two largest religious communities form the Lao Evangelical Church (LEC ), which has existed since the beginning of the 20th century and 2003, according to the Government 28 045 members had in 221 communities, and the Seventh- day Adventist Church, which currently include 115 members in Laos and are active in four provinces.

Denominations

Protestant denominations of the Lao Evangelical Church or the Seventh- day Adventist Church must join in order to be active in Laos allowed. The LEC is regarding finances and build independent organizations outside of Laos. Its president is Dr. Kamphone Kounthapanya. The number of church members shows a rising trend each year is subject to other communities. The LEC decreed in 2003 over 375 teachers of religion, which is not sufficient for the increasing number of believers and communities.

In the capital, Vientiane, there are two Protestant churches: In Chinatown in the Haiphong Road and in the western part of the city, Luang Prabang Road.
