Description

Butterfly

The wingspan of the butterfly is 90 to 95 millimeters. All wings have a whitish, yellowish or pale bluish to greenish color. On the upper side of the wings are broad black horizontal stripes. Female moths are sometimes nearly solid black. The hind wings showing red eye-spots near the Tornus and long black, outlined in white tails. The underside of the hind wing has all the features of the top at the same points in slightly paler version, but has an additional narrow red stripes.

Caterpillar

Adults caterpillars show a color dichotomy. The top section is black with a white spot in the middle, the lower part is green.

Similar Species

Protographium Philolaus is the overall appearance darker than other species of the genus Protographium, which is also a lack bluish or greenish drawing elements.

Distribution and habitat

Protographium Philolaus comes from South Texas prior to Honduras. The species prefers to live in tropical forest landscapes.

Way of life

The moths form two generations per year, which are found from March to November. Visit for nectar recording different flower or like to take fluid and minerals in a damp Erdstellen where they sometimes appear in large numbers. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various Annonengewächse ( Annonaceae ). The wintering pupae of the second generation.
