Protopteryx is a bird of the Jehol biota. Its most striking feature are two long central tail feathers.

Features

Protopteryx is as big a star as approximately. He is regarded as the most primitive Enanthiornithe. The two long central tail feathers have a long shaft that has no flags on the proximal side. His hand bones are longer than others enanthiornithen birds, but he already has with an initial procoracoid a significant adjustment for the flight by flapping their wings on. Also has Protopteryx Daumenfittiche, important for the balance during slow flight and at startup. Probably Protopteryx could fly better than Archaeopteryx or Conficiusornis.

Species

Only the type Protopteryx fengningensis ZHANG, ZHOU, 2000 is known.
