Providence (1977 film)

Providence is a French film in English from the year 1977. It is the first English-language film by the French director Alain Resnais.

Action

Clive Langham is a writer and lives in Providence, Rhode Iceland. Clive is an alcoholic and lives alone in his house. In a night of drinking he is working on his new novel. He writes a story about his own family. The main characters are his two sons, Claude and Kevin, as well as Claude's wife Sonia. Tormented by the effect of alcohol fantasizes Clive a story far removed from reality. The next day is his birthday and his family visited him. He must now realize that the nocturnal fantasies have nothing to do with real life.

Awards

1977 John Gielgud won the Best Actor Award at the New York Film Critics Circle for the role of Clive. A year later, the film with the Prix Méliès the French film critics association ( AFCC ) and seven César awards including the award for best French film of the year has been awarded. In Denmark Providence in 1978 awarded the Bodil Best European Film of the Year.
