Providence Reds

The Providence Reds (later Rhode Iceland Reds ) was an American ice hockey franchise in the American Hockey League from Providence, Rhode Iceland. The venues of the Reds were the Rhode Iceland Auditorium and the Providence Civic Center. Namesake of the franchise was the Rhode Iceland Red, a bred in the region domestic fowl.

History

The Providence Reds, who were founded in 1926, was a founding member of the Canadian - American Hockey League, in which they were active until its dissolution the next ten years in the same year. Then Providence was incorporated into the newly created International - American Hockey Leageue first in 1936 and finally in 1940. In the American Hockey League in which the team played up to its dissolution

The franchise won a total of four times the prestigious Calder Cup. First, in 1938 against the Syracuse Stars, 1940 against the Pittsburgh Hornets, 1949 against the Hershey Bears and finally in 1956 against the Cleveland Barons. Furthermore, the team in 1952, 1971 and 1974 was respectively in the final.

In the 1976/77 season the team name was changed to Rhode Iceland Reds, the team only one season long wearing, as the team after the season of the Broome Dusters of the North American Hockey League, which was disbanded in 1977, purchased and after Binghamton, New York was moved, where it played as the Binghamton Dusters in the AHL.
