Providence Steam Roller

The Providence Steam Roller ( s ) were an American football team, which was located from 1925 to 1931 in the National Football League ( NFL).

History

The team from Providence, Rhode Iceland was originally founded in 1916 as a football ball team that did not belong to the League. The team mainly comprised professional players together, who came from New England. 1924 the team won the New England Regional Championship. In the same year the Steamroller also played several times unofficially against NFL teams. The team was able to win three out of six games and played in a draw once.

In 1925, the Steamroller were included in the NFL. The team played in the newly built Cyclodome, a velodrome in Providence. The stadium had a capacity of 10,000 spectators.

Their first head coach in the NFL was Archie Golembeski, which was replaced by Jim Laird in the following year. From 1927 coached Jimmy Conzelman the team, the aground as a player for the team. However, Laird remained the team as players get. 1928 succeeded Conzelman with his team eight of 11 games to win. With this result, the team was able to secure the NFL championship.

In 1929, the Steamroller wore the first floodlit game in NFL history. The game went against the Chicago Cardinals with 16:0 lost. Conzelman remained four years coach of the team. 1931 had the Steamroller because of financial difficulties during the " Great Depression " adjust their game operation and left the league in 1933 final.

The name of the Steamroller were still conducted by other teams. From 1939 to 1941 played a team with this name in the American Association from 1962 to 1964 in the Atlantic Coast Football Conference.
