Provins

Provins, pronunciation: [ pʁo.vɛ ], is a commune with 12,206 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Seine- et- Marne ( No. 77) in the Ile- de -France region; it is the administrative center for the district of Provins and Canton of Provins. She is a member and the seat of the Communauté de Communes du Provinois and lies on the River Voulzie.

History

Provins is mentioned in documents only in the year 802 for the first time, but is probably very much older. From this time, however, the first military fortifications originate. Since Provins at the crossroads of important trade routes lay (North-South and East-West ), (up to the 13th century in particular 9 ) one of the largest markets in the country took place here in the Middle Ages. Even today, the then happening in the Grange aux Dîmes can be traced. The town was under the protection of the Counts of Champagne.

Provins was classified as Ville d' art et d' histoire since 2001 and is registered on the UNESCO List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity. The city wall, which was built in the years 1226 to 1314 is 1200 meters long and equipped with 22 towers.

The surface of the old town is interspersed with medieval passages that can be visited. They play a role in Umberto Eco's novel Foucault's Pendulum.

Provins is considered the capital of the rose processing: one gets Rose jam ( confiture de de rose petals ), rose honey ( miel à la rose de Provins ) and rose candy. In 1239 brought Thibaud IV de Champagne ( 1201-1253 ) with a crusade of the famous Damas rose. From it emerged from crosses many other kinds of roses.

  • Jean Renard ( born 1933 ) is a composer and songwriter, he wrote several well-known French songs, among other things, Sylvie Vartan and Johnny Hallyday.
  • Toussaint Rose ( 1611 or 1615-1701 ) was secretary of Jules Mazarin and Louis XIV and member of the Académie française.
