Prussian-Hessian Railway Company

The Prussian - Hessian Railway community was the joint operation of the railway department Mainz by the Royal Prussian and Grand Ducal Hessian State Railways.

Formation

Reason for this merger was to a geographical location of the two-part Grand Duchy of Hesse, which was closely interlaced with Prussian territories. On the other hand, both countries had to nationalize the goal, the last major private railway in Germany, the Hessian Ludwig Railway Company,. The two states joined on this project from the State Treaty of 23 June 1896.

On April 1, 1897, the administration of the Prussian State Railways took over the management of the State Railways of the Grand Duchy of Hesse under the joint name of the Prussian- Hessian Railway operating and financial community. Ownership and sovereignty as well as the proportionate yield remained under the state contract with the Grand Duchy of Hesse. To manage the railway community, the railway management Mainz was founded. December 14, 1901, the Kingdom of Prussia, the Grand Duchy of Hesse and the Grand Duchy of Baden concluded a treaty by which the previously operated by the three States Main-Neckar Railway was also incorporated into the Prussian - Hessian Railway Community.

Operation

Was also agreed that Hesse was able to influence the composition of the senior civil service posts. In contrast, technology and operation corresponded solely to the Prussian regulations. All officers wore the Prussian uniforms, however the Hessian officers were allowed to attach an hessisches badge. Prussian was also the spelling of the station name. That falls on today, because the two states anwandten different spelling rules. In the Kingdom of Prussia local and county names were with a distinctive prefix words such as " Old ", " New", " Large", " Small", " Bergisch ", " German ", etc. - if they were not written in one word - no hyphen, place names which are composed of two or more root name such as Schleswig -Holstein, Beeskow - Storkow etc. written with a hyphen .. In Hesse -Darmstadt was, however, used a hyphen in the first group of cases, written in the second the verbal elements together. This has the consequence that in the corresponding locations of the spelling of the town and the station name to this day differ from each other, such as the United Gerau / wholesale Gerau or High Brawn / High - brawn.

End

The Prussian - Hessian Railway Community ended with the transition of the state railways on the German Reich Railways on April 1, 1920.
