Psalm 21

The 21st Psalm is a Psalm of David in the Bible. He is the kind of the royal psalms belong.

Dating

The older Psalm boom Hermann Gunkel, Artur Weiser and Hans -Joachim Kraus assign the entire Psalm of the pre-exilic period. He had his place in life as part of a celebration of the royal court in the sanctuary.

After Oswald Loretz and other of the first part of the psalm is to assign the pre-exilic period (v. 2-7), while the second part (verses 8-14) is a later addition and subsequent commentary on the first part. These supplements come from the postexilic period.

A third possibility, to look at the sections 2-7 and 9-13 as pre-exilic and verse 8 and 14 as updates to its adaptation of the psalm to a later situation.

Structure

In research, the division is generally accepted the Psalms. There are the following different types:

The song of thanks (v. 2-7)

The song of thanks can be classified in the pre-exilic period. This in particular the proximity between the king and YHWH is put forth: He's help and power for the king (v. 2), the king met his prayers (v. 3), blesses and crowns him ( verse 4). The position of the king as God's representative is called (v. 6).

Although the King goes by that blessing of YHWH over all worldly things, yet he is not divine. The aim of the proximity between god and king represented serves to legitimize his reign.

The wishes of the king (v. 9-13)

This section is addressed to the king, containing a later insertion with respect to YHWH ( verse 10). The section is not treated as the first proximity between God and the king, but the king's enemies.
