Psalm 34

The 34th Psalm ( Greek- count of 33 ) is a psalm of David in the Bible. It belongs to the series of songs of thanksgiving. His verses are written in alphabetical order, an acrostic. It is the first Psalm, which describes angels as Warden of the godly.

Specified authorship

The psalm heading derives the Psalm of David - from the time in which it moves with the Philistines insane (1 Sam 21:11 ff EU). It probably confuses the psalm heading Achish of Gath with Abimelech of Gerar ( this actually occurs in the Book of Genesis: Gen 20.1 ff EU).

Assessment

The Old Testament scholar Hermann Gunkel criticized that the alphabetical arrangement of the Psalm prevents clear thinking. Thus in his commentary on the Psalms:

" From an alphabetical psalm can be at the big formal difficulty he has to overcome, do not ask too tight thought ok "
