Psalm 58

The 58th Psalm ( Greek- count of 57 ) is a psalm of David and classified in the series of " Lamentations of the people".

Structure

Hermann Gunkel divided the psalm as follows:

  • Verse 2f. Salutation and question
  • Verse 3: accusation
  • Verse 4-10: The impious servants of the "gods" Verse 4-6: Your nefarious conduct
  • Verse 7-10: curses on the same

Text Critical issues

The psalm raises the problem of which are with the salutation "gods" אלם meant. There are two different interpretations: either understands the psalmist here under as in Psalm 82 actually gods as members of the pantheon, or there are rulers meant, referred to ironically as "gods." The latter variant puts a lot of the translations near: King James Version, Revised Standard Version, New Geneva translation, Good News Bible and New Life talk of " powerful", while only the very text -abiding American Standard Version translated " gods ".

Liturgy of the Hours

Because of its offensiveness as a curse Psalm this psalm has been deleted from the 1971 Liturgy of the Hours of the Roman Catholic Church.
