Psarantonis

Psarandonis (Greek Ψαραντώνης, real name Andonis Xylouris ( Αντώνης Ξυλούρης ), * 1942 in Anoghia in the Prefecture of Rethymno) is one of the greatest musicians and singers Lyra of Crete.

Psarandonis - the pseudonym is composed of the word for " Fischer" and his first name - comes from one of the most famous musicians families of Crete; both his father and his grandfather were well-known musicians, his early deceased brother Nikos Xylouris and his other brother Yannis are also known in Crete and Greece. Psarandonis is since 1965 married to Katerina Doulgeraki and has 5 children. Three of them, the daughter Niki and two sons, Georgis and Charalambos, follow the family tradition and go as a singer and as a musician with Psarandonis on tour.

Psarandonis, as a child shepherd, began on the pastures of the mountains of Crete with the game of the lyre; he had his first appearances as a thirteen- year-old at weddings. In 1964 he recorded his first record on a single titled " Εσκέφτηκα να σ ' αρνηθώ ". International Psarandonis was discovered by the Bavarian Radio in the late 70s, when he won the first prize in Munich in a competition of the BR. His first LP "The Son of Psiloreitis " ( Son Of Psiloreitis ) was taken from the BR. Then he took on numerous other boards and was known in much of Europe, North America and Australia among lovers of this music.

Psarandonis is considered a representative of the Cretan folk music, even though he has created by his virtuosity and manner of performance has its own style, which sometimes dramatically contrasts with the traditional interpretation. The combination of archaic pattern with very personal new style elements and a partly ecstatic lecture make the music of Andonis Xylouris distinctive, but also polarizing. His texts, however, rather in the typical Cretan tradition.
