Pserimos

The Greek island Pserimos (Greek Ψέριμος ( f sg ) ) is administered by the municipality of Kalymnos in the region South Aegean.

Location

Pserimos is the largest tributary of the island municipality of Kalymnos. The island is located in the eastern Aegean Sea, about 3.5 km north of Kos and 5km west of Kalymnos. To the northeast is the shortest distance to Asia Minor, Bodrum ( Bodrum Turkish Yarımadası ) is 8 km. In close to the coast are some Felseninselchen. About a kilometer west lies the uninhabited island Platy. The only place and harbor is Avlakia ( Aυλάκια (n. pl. ) ) In the Bay of Pserimos ( Όρμος Ψερίμου ) on the south side.

The landscape of the water-scarce island is mainly characterized by low shrub vegetation. Pserimos is hilly to mountainous, reaching 268 m in the northeast with the highest elevation.

History

After Homer's Catalogue of Ships Pserimos was part of the Kalydna group. After only known inscription of Pserimos the island was AD under the control of Kos in the 3rd century.

Since ancient times Pserimos is known for the capers. Today the municipality promotes the cultivation of olive trees, now about 6,000 trees were planted northeast of the village. The 70 inhabitants live mainly from fishing and tourism. In the large bay in the east fish farming is operated.

In addition to the tree some taverns 170 m long beautiful sandy beach and situated on the northern outskirts of the village church, the Kimisis tis Panagia ( Kοίμησης της Παναγίας, Dormition of the Virgin ') is consecrated, there are no other sites on the almost only of day-trippers visited the island. Approximately 1.5 km north- west of the town in a long bay the church of Panagia Grafiotissa is ( Παναγία Γραφιώτισσα ).

Education

To enable school children on small islands to visit a secondary school tested the Dodecanese prefecture in collaboration with the department of computer science of the University of the Aegean, the Tele school. An extension to other small islands and remote communities is planned upon successful course of the project.
