Psi (instant messaging client)
Psi (pronounced [ saɪ ] ) is an instant messaging program for the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol ( XMPP ).

The goal of the Psi project is to offer a powerful XMPP client. Thus an attempt is made at the programming work to keep strictly to the XMPP templates and XEPs. This means that the Psi team does not implement features as long as they were not accepted by the XMPP community as standard. Thus, to ensure that Psi remains compatible and stable.
Features
Psi is a powerful XMPP client that strictly adheres to the standards of the XMPP Standards Foundation.

Availability
It is available as free software in the source code under the terms of version 2 or later of the GNU General Public License ( GPL), with the additional permission for binding with the Qt (also the commercial variant) and OpenSSL libraries, without whose need to enclose the source code.
Psi runs on Linux, Windows, Mac OS X and eComStation. Installation packages (RPM, deb ) are available for many Linux distributions. Ports are also available for FreeBSD and Solaris operating systems. It can be installed in most popular Linux distributions directly from the standard repositories.
Technology
Psi is written in the programming language C and has a rating based on the Qt library graphical user interface. The encapsulated in the program library Iris XMPP functionality is developed in a separate sub- project of a common parent project (the " Delta XMPP Project"). The telephony functionality uses the protocol extension jingle and transmits the voice signal using the speech codec Speex.
For the point-to- point encryption to communication servers the TLS implementation of the OpenSSL project is used for the OpenPGP end-to -end encryption of text messages GnuPG can be integrated. In addition, for Psi exists a plugin for Off- the-Record Messaging ( OTR). Also in Psi OTR can be used (on Windows and Linux).
History
The project was initiated in 2001 by Justin Karneges. The programming of the base code could Karneges be paid in the meantime - that Psi performed very well. Nevertheless, the release of their publications is relatively slow. Justin Karneges left the project in late 2004. Taking care of the project was since then in the hands of Kevin Smith. In early 2009, Smith returned to the scepter Karneges which again revives the somewhat lately creeping development of new wind. The core team also consists of Mikhail Pishchagin, Hal Rottenberg and Remko Tronçon. From mid-October 2007, published development version 0.11 Jabbin the project was split off that introduced support for IP telephony over XMPP with free software. Psi took this functionality in the end of June 2009 released version 0.13 has been working on since late 2005, after the function used by the protocol extension jingle was standardized. Naming
" Psi " is the abbreviation of Psynergy, a word created from psychic ( supernatural ) and energy (energy). Psi is also a Greek letter ( Ψ ), this is the logo of the Messengers.
