Psicose is a monosaccharide from the group of ketohexoses with the molecular formula C6H12O6.

Occurrence

D- psicose is found in nature only very rarely and only in small amounts. It is metabolized by humans in small extent, and therefore provides only a fraction of the energy that would provide an equal amount of D-glucose.

As with any sugar (except dihydroxyacetone), there are two enantiomeric forms, such as image and mirror image behave. L- psicose does not occur in nature and has as an enantiomer of the natural D- psicose only of academic interest.

Properties

In aqueous solution, there is an intramolecular ring closure, resulting in a balance between the keto form and the two ring forms sets ( roughly equal parts α/β-Furanose- and α / β - pyranose form).
