Citizen Lab relies on " trusted" contacts and hopes to be able to enlist as many users. Unlike publicly accessible IP addresses from large servers that are relatively easy to lock the act Psiphon computer for private users as an independent access points whose IP address is known only to a small circle. About this detour, users tap into the countries affected by the content locks uncensored access to the Internet. The case retrieved data is encrypted, the traffic is, for example, run an international network for financial transactions. It would therefore be difficult to state censorship to filter the data concerned from this traffic.

The application program does not need to be installed on the user's computer, but can be accessed via a web-based log-in function. As a censorship free proxy portals function here the computers of users, who contribute their devices available for this purpose. The Psiphon users in a country affected by censorship environment must ultimately connect only to a Psiphon users in a free country, to get unfettered access to the Internet.
