PSPP

PSPP is a software for the analysis of statistical data. The program is designed as a free and fully compatible replacement for the proprietary program SPSS, but so far only covers a limited scope of its functions from. It has a graphical user interface and the ability to control via a command line.

Functions

PSPP can import Excel, Gnumeric, OpenDocument Spreadsheet, CSV, ASCII and Postgres and export data to ASCII format in the SPSS Portable, the SPSS system and. With PSPP can be t- tests, analysis of variance, linear regression and a variety of other statistical operations. The program has a variety of ways to recode data, rearrange and change it.

Background

The PSPP project was initiated to give users the possibility to avoid the limitations of SPSS. Under the terms of use of SPSS, it is Customer is prohibited to copy the program or change. SPSS can be purchased or rented. There is also a free full version of SPSS, the original, available for download. This trial is 20 days after the installation executable. In newer versions of SPSS Digital Rights Management system is built, which serves to prevent the use of the software after the let. The user of the rental license must renew the license after one year. The purchase license is unrestricted and unlimited usable. One limitation of duration and number of variables exists only in the purchasable in bookshops student license of SPSS. However, this is not marketed by SPSS itself, but by a private company that is not in communication with SPSS.

The author of PSPP therefore to provide a free, SPSS interoperable alternative, which still does not provide either the license expires, an artificial restriction on the number of variables and in which it is permitted to anyone to copy, modify and swap decided.

The name PSPP is an allusion to the proprietary counterpart SPSS, has, in contrast to this but no official meaning. Instead, the author submitted a number of proposals such as Perfect Statistics Professionally Presented or People Should Prefer PSPP.

PSPP is written in C that uses GNU Scientific Library for its mathematical routines and plotutils to generate diagrams.

Reception

In the book " SPSS For Dummies " author PSPP mentioned under the heading "Ten useful things that you can find on the Internet ." In 2006, the South African Statistical Association discussed at a conference, among other things, how to use PSPP as a free replacement for SPSS.
