Pterygoplichthys

Pterygoplichthys sp.

Pterygoplichthys (synonym: Glyptoperichthys ) is a genus of fish in the family of armored catfish ( Loricariidae ).

Description

In 1858 set up by Gill genus, about a dozen species are summarized. Although they remind externally very similar to the representatives of the genus Hypostomus, they can be of these but slightly by the higher number of dorsal fin rays ( Pterygoplichthys: about 7: 10 to 13 Hypostomus ) differ. Some species can reach over 45 cm. The ground color varies depending on the type between black and brown, the body is busy in most species with spots or dot patterns. The genus is widespread in rivers and lakes of South America, usually in Regendwaldnähe.
