Ptolemaeus of Commagene
Ptolemy ( ancient Greek Πτολεμαίος ) was the first king of Commagene, 163 BC
Ptolemy was the Armenian- Iranian origin and came from the dynasty of Orontids. He was of about 170-163 epistates of Commagene. When the empire of the Seleucids, under whom stood Commagene, from 163 fell apart, Ptolemy decided to revolt and declared Commagene an independent kingdom. Ptolemy made Samosata, the capital of the province of Commagene to capital.
Ptolemy was a relative of King Mithridates I and thus also related to the Parthian royal dynasty. According to an inscription on Mount Nemrut Ptolemy was a descendant of Darius I. Ptolemy died in 130 BC The name of his wife is unknown. His son and successor was Samos II Theosebes Dikaios.
