Paratilapia sp.

The Ptychochrominae are a subfamily of cichlids ( Cichlidae ). There are altogether 17 known species of Malagasy cichlids which are available in five genera.

All Malagasy cichlids a typical cichlid shape with a moderately high-backed body a big head and a little deeply cleft mouth. The fish are 18 to 35 inches long. All species live exclusively on Madagascar, many endemic to only a few rivers and lakes.

Endangering

Through the importation of foreign fish species such as tilapia, largemouth bass, giant gouramis, carp, Gambusia and Guppies that compete with the cichlids for food or their boy eat most species are endangered. Some species are probably already extinct. Various institutions such as the Leipzig Zoo conservation breeding attempt by the Malagasy cichlids ago from extinction.

Malagasy cichlids are substrate spawners, which lay their eggs usually open on a rock.
