Publy

Publy is a commune in the French department of Jura in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Publy is located on 525 m above sea level. M., about eight miles southeast of the town of Lons -le- Saunier (air line). The scattered village extends in the Jura, in the south of the plateau Caledonia (first Jura plateau ), between the erosion valley of the Creux de Revigny in the west and the hills of the Côte de l' Today in the East.

The area of ​​15.18 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The main part of the territory occupied by the level of the plateau Caledonia, the average at 530 m above sea level. M. lies and partly of arable and meadow land, part of the forest ( Bois des épaisses ) is passed. The plateau has no above-ground rivers, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. In the west of the municipality extends to the bottom edge of the Creux de Revigny. In the east the plateau is bounded by the crest of the Côte de l' Today, on the 669 m above sea level. M. the highest elevation of Publy is achieved in the Château de Beauregard. A small proportion of the municipal area is located east of the Côte de l' Today in the Valley of the Combe d' Ain.

To Publy include the hamlet Binans (540 m above sea level. M. ) in a trough at the western foot of the Côte de l' Today, as well as some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Publy are Conliège, Vevy and Verges in the north, Blye and Mesnois in the east, and Nogna Poids -de- Fiole in the south and Revigny in the West.

History

The territory of Publy been inhabited since prehistoric times and during the Gallo- Roman period. Are first mentioned Publy and Binans in a bull of Pope Anastasius IV in 1153. During the 13th century Publy were awarded certain liberties. It belonged in the Middle Ages to the rule Binans. During the siege of Lons -le- Saunier, the castle Binans granted the population of Conliège protection. On the King Louis XIV command the castles Binans and Beauregard were demolished. Together with the Franche -Comté Publy came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. To a field change occurred in 1824, when the previously independent Binans was incorporated into Publy.

Attractions

The present parish church of Saint -Nicolas in Publy was built in the 15th century and expanded in 1593 with the construction of the chapel Sainte -Barbe. The side chapel of Saint- Renorbert was added in 1695. From the former Château de Binans the ruins have been preserved: the perimeter wall, the lower part of the Romanesque keep, the foundations of the manor house and the Salle des Dames. The large rectangular keep of the Château de Beauregard, which was probably built in the 10th century by the Lords of Coligny, is a tourist destination and offers a beautiful panoramic view of the surroundings.

Population

With 286 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Publy one of the small towns in the Jura. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1891 433 persons were still counted ), only small fluctuations were recorded since the early 1980s.

Economy and infrastructure

Publy was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture and forestry village. The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road that leads from Nogna after Crançot. Further road links exist with Conliège and Verges.
