Puerto Ayacucho is since 1928 the capital of the Venezuelan state of Amazonas. The town of 80,000 inhabitants located on the Orinoco and is also the capital of the district Atures.

The people of Puerto Ayacucho are mostly Creoles, lives in the town next to a multitude of Indians, such as the Yanomami, Bari, Piaroa and Guajibo.

History

The city was founded in 1924 together with Samariapo, 63 km to the south as a port city. The two cities were connected by a road to bypass a navigable due to rapids not part of the Orinoco. Thus, the wood from the Amazon could now be taken away. Until 1980, only the two cities were connected to each other, but cut off from the rest of Venezuela. Only in 1980 the poor sandy road was renewed and Puerto Ayacucho began to grow rapidly. The port has now lost its significance.

Climate

Puerto Ayacucho is located in the tropics of South America. The average annual temperature is 26.8 degrees Celsius and the mean annual rainfall 2260 mm. In the city itself there is a weather station.
