Puerto de Mejillones is a province in the western part of the Oruro Department in the highlands of South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location

The Puerto de Mejillones province is one of sixteen provinces in the Oruro Department. It lies between 18 ° 53 'and 19 ° 16' south latitude and between 68 ° 10 ' and 68 ° 26 ' west longitude.

It is surrounded to the north, west and east of the province of Atahuallpa, in the southwest it borders with the Republic of Chile. The province extends over 45 km in a north-south direction and 35 km in east-west direction.

Population

The population of the province of Puerto de Mejillones has risen in the past two decades to more than double:

42.6 percent of the population are younger than 15 years old. 97.0 percent of the population speak Spanish, 66.6 percent and 8.6 percent Aymara Quechua.

74 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 73 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

83.8 percent of the working population is employed in agriculture, 1.0 percent in industry, 15.2 percent in the service sector ( 2001).

74 percent of the population is Catholic, 18 percent are Protestant (1992).

  • Municipio Carangas - 665 inhabitants (Update 2010)
  • Municipio La Rivera - 604 inhabitants
  • Municipality of Todos Santos - 373 inhabitants
