Puerto Escondido is a city in Mexico on the Pacific coast in the state of Oaxaca. Besides the tourists, it is a destination for surfers and body boarders before all things. It has about 50,000 inhabitants (calculated 2006).

The city was discovered in the late 1950s by surfers and learned since then a moderate tourism development. Puerto Escondido is famous for the so-called Mex Pipe, a tubular shaft at Playa Zicatela, which is, together with a similar wave in Hawaii to the biggest waves of its kind in the world. She reached in the fall of a height of up to ten meters.

Many beaches are accessible from the city. Playa Bacocho lies in the west, to Acapulco, and, with its length of 1.4 kilometers, the second largest beach to Playa Zicatela.
