Pugachyov

Pugachev (Russian Пугачёв ) is a town with 41,707 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Russian Saratov Oblast. She is one of the Oblast imputed town as well as the administrative center of Rajons Pugachev.

Geographical location

Pugachev is located in the northeastern part of the Oblast, 246 km from the capital city of Saratov removed at the Great Irgis. The nearest town Balakowo 68 kilometers west of Pugachev.

History

Pugachev was after Empress Catherine II in 1762 had issued a manifesto to the colonization of the Volga level. Founded in 1764 as a settlement of the place Metschetnaja ( Мечетная ) was of Old Believers who returned home from Poland. The name derives from Metschetnaja found here ruins Islamic mosques from the time of the Golden Horde. In 1765 the site already counted 264 men. The place was at that time only a single road.

1772 held Yemelyan Pugachev, the leader of the Pugachev peasant uprising, in a Metschetnaja. Here he is an old man who advised when the late Tsar Peter III. issue.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the population had risen so that after the tsarist decree of 18 December 1835, the town rights. At the same time, the city was renamed in honor of Nicholas I in Nikolaievsk. In 1836, the city became the capital of the district in the province of Samara Nikolaievsk was appointed.

On 11 November 1918 the city was renamed again on the initiative of the Bolshevik military leader Vasily Chapaev. The new name Pugachev refers to Yemelyan Pugachev, leader of the peasant uprising of 1773-75 ( see above).
