Puhja Parish

Puhja is a rural municipality in the Estonian Tartu county. It has 2,402 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2010). The community area is 169.6 km ².

The community is located 25 km west of Tartu. In addition to the main town Puhja to the municipality includes the villages Härjanurme, Järvaküla, Kaimi, Kureküla, Mõisanurme, Mäeselja, Nasja, Palupõhja, Poriküla, Ridaküla, Rämsi, Saare, Teilma, Tännassilma, Ulila, Vihavu, Võllinge and Võsivere.

35 % of the area consists of bogs, 24 % is covered by forest. Since 1991, a partnership with the community Kuhmoinen in Finland.

The parish of Puhja was first mentioned in documents in 1347, the same year the local church. 1495-1499 was the Baltic German Fromhold of Tiesenhausens built the current church, which was rebuilt after destruction in the 17th century.
