The Puig de Massanella ( Castilian Pico de Masanella ) is 1364.184 meters is the second highest mountain in the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca. It belongs to the mountain range of the Serra de Tramuntana and the municipality of Escorca.

The Puig de Massanella is the highest freely accessible mountain in Mallorca, Puig Major is higher because of the military zone. As the Puig Major is the Puig de Massanella snowed occasionally in winter.

Touristic development

The ascent of Puig de Massanella takes place from the parking lot at the Coll de sa Bataia. For the mountain tour a small passage fee is charged by the private owner of the farm Comafreda, whose purpose specifically a guard is set. About 92 % of the area of the Tramuntana Mountains are privately owned.

In the area above 1000 meters peaks both pathways are poorly marked with cairns and color markings and therefore require good sense of direction and mountaineering experience. In bad weather is not recommended for this reason and because of the risk of falling in the area of the summit plateau of an ascent.

GR 221

The 7th stage of the Mallorcan Walking Route GR 221 leads from Tossals Verds to Son Amer about the Massanella massif. This way of Font des Prat over the Puig de ses Bassetes and the Coll de ses Cases de sa New ( pass the snow houses ), is characterized excellent and accessible without charge.

Like the GR 222 ( Ruta d' Arta a Lluc ) the 6th and 7th stage of the GR 221, Sóller to the Sanctuary of Lluc apply, because the target Lluc as a pilgrimage.
