Puigcerdà

Puigcerdà [ ˌ putʃsərða ] is a small town and a ski resort in Catalonia (Spain ) in the province of Girona. The town has 8910 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) and is the administrative center of the comarca of Cerdanya.

Geographical location

Puigcerdà lies at an altitude of 1202 m in the Catalan Pyrenees in the broad valley of the River Segre directly on the border with France.

History

King Alfonso I founded 1170-1177 the town and granted it the status of a capital city ( the county of Cerdanya ). Until 1345 the city was one of the seven most important places in Catalunya. After the earthquake of 1428, a new castle was built. In the Treaty of the Pyrenees of 1659 was the eastern part of Cerdanya, the Alta Cerdanya to France, was Puigcerdà border town. In 1886, the city walls were pulled down. In 1922 the city was connected to the railway network. Puigcerdà developed for their summer vacation. After the Spanish Civil War was looking for and after the winter sports collection and Hockey is there since 1956 even played.

Attractions

Earthquakes, fires and border conflicts are responsible for ensuring that obtained from the historic structure slightly. Thus one finds the center of town only a Gothic bell tower of the no longer existing church of Santa Maria. However, there is in the narrow streets of downtown a lively atmosphere which makes a visit worthwhile. These is also the park Schierbeck, the end of the 19th century, was built around the small lake north of the center.
