Pulaski County (Indiana)

Pulaski County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Winamac.

Geography

The County is located in the central northwestern Indiana and has an area of 1126 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Starke County, Marshall County, Fulton County, Cass County, White County and Jasper County.

History

Pulaski County was formed on February 7, 1835 from portions of Cass County and St. Joseph County. It was named after Casimir Pulaski, a former Polish soldier and politician, who emigrated to America and became a hero of the American Revolutionary War. He died in the Battle of Savannah.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Pulaski County 13,755 people in 5,170 households and 3,779 families. The population density was twelve inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.53 percent White, 0.92 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.35 percent from other races groups; 0.76 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.39 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 5,170 households out of which 33.9 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 61.4 percent were married couples living together, 7.3 percent were single mothers and 26.9 percent were non-families. 23.5 percent of all households and 11.4 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.06.

26.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.4 percent between 18 to 24, 27.3 percent between 25 and 44 years. 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 101.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 99.7 males.

The median income for a household was $ 35,422, and the median income for a family $ 41,028. Males had a median income of $ 30,673, women $ 21,246. The per capita income was $ 16,835. 6.3 percent of families and 8.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
