Pulegone is a monocyclic monoterpene ketone with a pleasant, reminiscent of peppermint and camphor smell. The specific rotation of [ α ] D 21 °.
Occurrence
Pulegone is found in all plant parts of the pennyroyal Mentha pulegium and including in Hedeoma pulegioides.
Effect
Pulegone is harmful. It irritates the digestive tract, but also the intact skin and mucous membranes. Furthermore, it can lead to convulsions, acidosis, and colic.
Use
Pulegone serves as a base or starting material for the manufacture of perfume oils for soaps and detergents, as a component of insect repellents and for the synthesis of menthol.
