Head Study of a Brillenkauzes

The Brillenkäuze are a genus of owls within the family of authentics owls. The owls of this species are exclusively in tropical and sub-tropical America from Mexico to Argentina before.

Features

Brillenkäuze are relatively large owls. You can reach body lengths of 41-52 centimeters. Characteristic of Brillenkäuze is a lack of ear tufts. The head seems swollen. All four species have whitish to ocher games, which give the eyes something like glasses and have led to the common name in English in the face. The eyes are large and vary from orange -yellow to dark brown. The claws are strongly developed. The throat and the front neck are separated from the rest of the body plumage by a band that stands out in color.

Species

Traditionally, three types should be included under the genus Brillenkäuze. Claus König, Friedhelm Weick and differ in their monograph published in 2008, Owl brewing with the short - Spectacled a fourth type which is treated in older literature as a subspecies of Brillenkauzes. According to the two ornithologists, it is justified to treat this type as autonomous, because the sound repertoire is different from the Brillenkauzes and there are also many differences in plumage. Overall, therefore, the following species are described:

  • Spectacled ( P. perspicillata )
  • Short Brow Spectacled ( Pulsatrix pulsatrix )
  • Gelbbrauenkauz ( P. koeniswaldiana )
  • Bindenkauz ( P. melanota )
