Punta de Estaca de Bares

The Punta Estaca de Bares is a cape on the north coast of Spain in the province of A Coruña, Galicia. It marks the northernmost point of Spain and the Iberian Peninsula. At 101 meters above sea level, a 10 m high lighthouse stands with a range of 25 nautical miles ( 46 km), which is there since 1850 in operation.

Within sight is a former LORAN station, which was operated from the early 1960s by the U.S. Coast Guard (United States Coast Guard ). In 1978, the U.S. Air Force, the building and used it until 1991. Since the system is abandoned and forfeited.

The cape is the tip of a rocky peninsula between the Rías Ortigueira and Barquero and is considered as the boundary between the Bay of Biscay to the east and the open Atlantic. With an average rainfall of about 1500 mm per year, it is one of the rainiest places in Europe. The annual average temperature is 13.1 ° C.
