Puntarenas is a port city in the west of the Central American country Costa Rica. Puntarenas is the most important port on the Pacific coast of the country and counts 40,000 inhabitants ( 2001). The city is located at the entrance to the Gulf of Nicoya, opposite the Nicoya Peninsula on a narrow spit of land.

Since the setting of the railways in the 1980s Puntarenas was only connected to by road with the city of San Jose. However, a passenger pair from the capital San Jose was reactivated down to the Pacific to Puntarenas few years ago then. This a pair of trains transported on Sundays trippers from the metropolitan area of San Jose on the Pacific, which is still a popular family outing, for which the railway is irreplaceable. This ride will take about 4 hours in the morning to Puntarenas, evening back to San Jose. These trips must be booked in advance.
