Puqueldón

Puqueldón is a city on the island Lemuy in Chile, which together with eight villages, the community ( Comuna ) Puqueldón. In the community, which was supported in 2002 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, there are three buildings that have been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site.

History

The village Puqueldón with its original indigenous population in 1776 was first mentioned as " Pucolón " documented and collected at the end of the 18th century the town (Villa ). A first chapel in Puqueldón was mentioned in 1785, and at a census in 1787 there were in Puqueldón, which was a military base and garrison town during the colonial period in Chile, and the neighboring places Aldachildo and Ichuac together already 1,395 inhabitants. 1826 Puqueldón was an administrative seat ( Departamento ), and in 1924 ordered the city public schools, a post office, registry office and a city's central square (Plaza ). The church was built in 1940. In the 1960s Puqueldón had one of the first cities in Chile a mayor, who belonged to the Socialist Party, giving the city the nickname of "Little Cuba (Cuba Chica ) " earned.

Population

When the 2002 census was found for the community Puqueldón a population of 4,160 ( 2,006 males and 2,154 females, most of whom lived in the area of the former city Puqueldón. Between 1992 and 2002, the population fell by 2.1 %.

Infrastructure

Puqueldón located on the north coast of the island Lemuy and has a small fishing harbor. As the focal point of a community is referred to in Chile Comuna Puqueldón home to various authorities. The place also has a library, several schools and a sports court. In the main street Calle J. M. Carrera will find shopping, restaurants and accommodation for tourists. Center of the city is - as in the other cities of Chile - a square, Plaza de Armas -called court, by which the church was built in 1940 ( Puqueldón belongs to the diocese of San Carlos de Ancud ), City Hall ( municipalidad ), the post office and the main school called Colegio group.

Attractions

In the north- east of the city can be enjoyed from the Mirador de la Virgen a beautiful view over Puqueldón and its surroundings. Located on the central Plaza de Armas San Onolasco church with a gable roof and two highly visible towers was established in 1940 in collaboration between the city's residents from various woods - built themselves - mainly larch and cypress. Such a community is working on the islands of Chiloe and Lemuy in home building common practice and is called " minga ". Every year on 29 June as part of the parish feast from here a procession to the other eight churches and chapels on the island instead. Three of them were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in November 2000:

Transport links

From the harbor Chulchuy, 6 km west of Puqueldón, operates hourly or half-hourly car ferry to Puerto Huichas in the community Chonchi on the larger island of Chiloé. With the other places on Lemuy Puqueldón about passable in all weather asphalt or gravel roads is connected, where buses run regularly. Some buses even go on Chiloé directly to the provincial capital Castro. The nearest airport is located in Puerto Montt in the Chilean mainland.
