Purdah

Parda (literally curtain; persian پرده; Hindustani: पर्दा, Parda, English Purdah ) is widespread in Pakistan and India form the Islamic veiling of women. Central to this is a whole body, often including the face, covering clothing, traditional burqa - like garment. Widespread but are also the chador and the niqab ( face veil ).

The physical partitioning of a building done by their own area for women ( in larger buildings, Harem = prohibited district), curtains and the like. The life of a woman in Parda limited their personal, social and economic interactions with the outside world ( seclusion ).

During the Taliban rule in Afghanistan were Parda strict rules. The practice is justified by Islam in most regions of Arabia and the Indian subcontinent.

Other meanings

  • In colloquial English the word purdah is a synonym for segregation in the sense of " segregation ".
  • Purdah is used by the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, to designate the period during which plans are already prepared for it, but the annual budget has not yet been presented and discussed during the he no issues that could be relevant for the coming budget.
  • Purdah is also used in the UK to refer to the time between the announcement and the implementation of an election. During this time, all government activities, of which it is assumed that they could possibly give a particular party or candidate benefits suspended.
