History

Early History and Medieval

Since the 8th century BC, the area Purkersdorf been continually inhabited by the Illyrians of the Hallstatt and La Tène Celts then. Also finds from the Roman period are available.

Established the place Purkersdorf was as forest settlement around the year 1000. Purchartesdorf the name, when its owner Albero de Purchartesdorf in 1133 was mentioned Proven appearing as a witness and donors in various writings of Klosterneuburg. Even at this time was probably built the castle. Habsburg period

The sovereign's forest area was developed by 1500 bis 1848/49 managed by the Imperial Forest Office, which ruled the place as a representative of the landlords. The forest department had its headquarters to 1788 in Purkersdorfer castle. It was not only professional administrative body, but also magistrate sovereign's supervisory authority, which had jurisdiction over. 1284 acquired the German Order here extensive forest holdings ( German forest district ). It was not until 1766 this Burckersdorffer groves were sold to the forest office. 1452 attracted the Hungarians through the town. During the siege of Vienna in 1529 and 1683 by the Turks Purkersdorf was devastated as the entire area surrounding Vienna.

Destined for the place was its location to the state road that followed the historic Roman road over the Riederberg. From 1558 Burkherdorffer post office has been proven, but it is certainly much older. She was the first and therefore very profitable service station on the route Vienna -Linz. 1796/97, the post office, was rebuilt in the early classical style. The relief- decorated facade is still visible. At the time of the Reformation, the Roman Catholic parish was closed in 1570 and only established by Emperor Maximilian II again.

In 1713 the town was ravaged by the plague, which had been introduced from Vienna. Almost half the 250 residents fell victim to her. 1805 were of Napoleon prisoner, allegedly 3,000 men locked up in the local church, the verheizten the entire inventory because of the cold.

It was not until 1849 Purkersdorf became an independent local church. 1856-1858 here was a part of the k.k. privileged Empress Elisabeth Railway, built the present-day Western Railway and Purkersdorf so connected to the modern transport network. The Countess Furstenberg however had a modified route - with a station one kilometer from the town center - enforced. 1873 Volunteer Fire Purkersdorf was founded. 1905 was the opening of the sanatorium Purkersdorf, designed by Josef Hoffmann as a spa and hydrotherapy institute.

20th century

In the interwar period, the town was in 1929 raised to the market town. A short time later, after the annexation of Austria to the German Reich, the town was incorporated on 15 October 1938 as part of the newly created 14th district Penzing case- Vienna.

On April 5, 1945, the invasion of the Red Army, without major combat operations from Wienerwaldsee carried forth. About sixty residents, including many convinced National Socialists committed suicide. On April 12, 1945 local government was used by the Soviet occupation. The crew in place in 1947, deducted the Ortskommandantur 1949. Purkersdorf was born on September 1, 1954 through the separation of Vienna independent again. In 1966 ( enactment, official celebration in 1967 ), the market town finally elevated to municipality.

In 1973, the twinned with Bad Säckingen was received on the Upper Rhine. Other sister cities are Sanary -sur -Mer in France and Gostling an der Ybbs in Lower Austria. Although there have been major floods when the Vienna stepped out of their banks, most recently in 1940, 1997 and 2002. In 2002, the Austrian Federal Forests based its new headquarters in a multi-storey timber construction in the park.

Traffic

Purkersdorf is located on the Western Railway and has at this four stops ( Purkersdorf Sanatorium, under Purkersdorf Purkersdorf - center and lower - Untertullnerbach ). Purkersdorf is served by the S -Bahn line S50 to the Vienna West Station, run further in the rush hour of the Unter Purkersdorf trains to and from the S15/S2b Mistelbach. In the stop Purkersdorf center hold additional hourly regional trains between Vienna and West -St. Pölten.

In Purkersdorf the West motorway A 1 starts (Vienna - border crossing Walser mountain near Salzburg ).

Health care

In Purkersdorf there are several general practitioners, specialists and two pharmacies. The next hospitals are located in St. Pölten, Tulln and Vienna. In the village there is a department of the Red Cross and the Workers' Samaritan Federation that are staffed around the clock and jointly operate an ambulance base.
