Purranque is a town and municipality of the Province of Osorno in Chile's Región de los Lagos ( Lake District ). It has about 20,000 inhabitants and is located on the Panamerican Highway main road, towards Patagonia. It is located 45 km south of Osorno and 63 kilometers north of Puerto Montt.

History

In the area that used to be called Purranquíl, lived up to the beginning of the 19th century the tribe Huilliche. Its chief Railef sold the territory to the first Spaniards. The route of the Spaniards went through the area of the Camino Real ( Royal Road ) which connected Valdivia and the archipelago of Chiloé.

1813 bought Camilo Santibanez, the first inhabitants of European origin, of Railef the area, which was henceforth the name Fundo Dollinco. Later it was owned by the landowner Félix Rosas Manrique de Lara.

The city Purranque was founded on 18 April 1911 as Villa Lo Burgos Tomás Burgos Sotomayor. He married the daughter of Félix Rosas Manrique de Lara, Sofia Rosa Durán, who had inherited a part of the territory Dollinco.

To get connection to the planned railway network, Tomás Burgos Sotomayor has proactively established in the city. This progress came to the region. This railway connects to date with the main cities Osorno and Puerto Montt.

An official decree of 1915 recognizes the founding of Villa Lo Burgos. 1941 Purranque was raised to the community and set the appropriate limits.

A large number of families who currently live in the area of Purranque come from a German wave of immigrants who came to the ports of Corral (Chile) and Puerto Montt in the middle of the 19th century (1846 ). As colonies, they contribute to the development of agriculture, crafts and trade in southern Chile.

Economy

The local economy consists primarily of agricultural products and livestock. This part of the province of Osorno is known for its beef, which takes in all Chilean regions paragraph. In addition, there are small and medium-sized companies that manufacture dairy products for the southern and central regions of Chile. Berries and the foods produced from it are exported mainly.

Tourism

Religious Festivals

The Feast of HI.Sebastian the patron of the city is celebrated since 1935 and has revived a tradition of the first Spanish arrivals in southern Chile. Around 30,000 pilgrims gather from all regions of Chile on every 20th of January.
