Putignano

Putignano is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 26 957 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Bari, in Puglia. The village is located about 50 kilometers southeast of Bari and about 65 kilometers north of Taranto. After Putignano the asteroid ( 7665 ) Putignano was named.

History

The municipality is located in the center of ancient Peuketien. The area was heavily influenced by Greek culture. By 1000 the area was added to the Benedictine monastery in Monopoli. Over the centuries the lords of Putignano changed frequently.

Culture

Since 1394 is celebrated in Putignano carnival. It is the oldest Mardi Gras tradition in Italy.

Traffic

Putignano is accessible via the Strada Statale 172 and State Road 377. Since 1900, there is a rail connection to the lines Bari - Martina Franca - Taranto and Bari - Casamassima - Putignano.
