Putnam County (Indiana)
Putnam County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Greencastle.
Geography
The County is located in west-central Indiana, is about 70 km from Illinois and has an area of 1250 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Montgomery County, Hendricks County, Morgan County, Owen County, Clay County and Parke County.
History
Putnam County was formed on December 31, 1821 from parts of Owen County and Vigo County. Officially registered it was named on 1 April 1822. Was to Israel Putnam, a general in the American Revolutionary War.
The is the county seat since the formation of the county Greencastle, named after Greencastle, Pennsylvania, the birthplace of Ephraim Dukes, who had donated the land for the construction of the city.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Putnam County 36 019 people in 12,374 households and 9,119 families. The population density was 29 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 94.87 percent White, 2.93 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.52 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.42 percent from other races groups; 0.89 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.14 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 12,374 households out of which 34.0 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 62.4 percent were married couples living together, 7.7 percent were single mothers and 26.3 percent were non-families. 22.4 percent of all households and 9.4 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.99.
23.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 13.2 percent between 18 to 24, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44 years. 21.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 108.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over 108.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 38,882, and the median income for a family $ 45,916. Males have a median income of $ 31,989, women $ 22,029. The per capita income was $ 17,163. 6.4 percent of families and 8.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
