Putnam County (Indiana)

Putnam County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Greencastle.

Geography

The County is located in west-central Indiana, is about 70 km from Illinois and has an area of 1250 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Montgomery County, Hendricks County, Morgan County, Owen County, Clay County and Parke County.

History

Putnam County was formed on December 31, 1821 from parts of Owen County and Vigo County. Officially registered it was named on 1 April 1822. Was to Israel Putnam, a general in the American Revolutionary War.

The is the county seat since the formation of the county Greencastle, named after Greencastle, Pennsylvania, the birthplace of Ephraim Dukes, who had donated the land for the construction of the city.
