Putnam County (West Virginia)

Putnam County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Winfield.

Geography

The County is located in the west of West Virginia, just 35 km away from the border of Ohio and has an area of 908 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Mason County, Jackson County, Kanawha County, Lincoln County and Cabell County.

History

Putnam County was formed on March 11, 1818 from parts of Cabell County, Kanawha County and Mason County. It was named after Israel Putnam, an American general in the American Revolutionary War and participants of the Battle of Bunker Hill ( 1775).

According to the census in 2000 lived in Putnam County 51 589 people in 20,028 households and 15,281 families. The population density was 58 people per square kilometer.
