Pwllheli

Pwllheli [ pʊɬhɛlɪ ] is a municipality and the central market town in the county of Gwynedd ( North West Wales).

General

Pwllheli is situated on the southeast coast of the Lleyn Peninsula ( Welsh: Penrhyn Llŷn ) in the Irish Sea. The name Pwllheli means " salt water pool " or " dock ".

81 % of the population ( in the 10 -14- year-old even 94%) speak Welsh as their main language, here also the Plaid Cymru ( "The Party of Wales ") was established, which advocates independence for Wales within the European Union. Pwllheli is the birthplace of Albert Evans -Jones, Arch Druid of the Gorsedd Ynys Prydain Beirdd ( Welsh bard Association ) from 1950 to 1953.

History and Transport

Edward the " Black Prince " 1355 gave the town city rights and permission, every Wednesday a market day on the Maes ( " field") in the center to hold. Shipbuilding and fishing, as well as the granite quarries at Gimlet Skirt ( Carreg yr Imbill ) contributed to the prosperity of the community.

By 1890 the city was expanded, it created the promenade and the West End. A privately run tram that Pwllheli and Llanbedrog Tramway, initially as a horse-drawn tram (1899-1919), of Pwllheli after Llanbedrog was built, which existed until 1927. Then it was partially destroyed by storm damage, later adopted by the community and continue to operate the undamaged part. The Solomon bridge at the Tramway route over the Afon Cymerau at the mouth of the harbor, built also in 1890, now serves the road.

The station is the terminus of the Cambrian Coast Railway, the former Aberystwith and Welsh Coast Railway, a range of Cambrian Railways ( Llinell Cambria ) of Shrewsbury ( Shropshire, England) via Machynlleth after Pwllheli comes.
